Have you ever volunteered to re-install windows on a friend’s machine? These days you don’t have to be a technician to do it. “There, it’s done you” you think, but wait now there’s the problem of finding the proper device drivers for all your devices.
We’ve all been there. If you’re machine is a Dell or other tier one machine and is well supported you can download the drivers. It takes a little while but it’s doable. What about vendors that don’t offer good driver support? What about that no name PCI card installed after purchase for which your friend has invariably lost the driver? For many people this is where the process bogs down.
If you’re fortunate enough to be rebuilding a machine that hasn’t completely died you have another option. That option is DriverBackup! By Giusseppe Greco. As the name would suggest this little piece of software (which need not be installed to run) makes a backup of all the installed drivers on the machine. You can then save them to an external location. When you’re basic Windows install is done reconnect the external device with all the drivers and point Windows to it every time it asks for drivers.
