Blackberry 8900 – Good stuff and small enough

I just got the Blackberry 8900, or as many people call it the new Curve. I wasn’t my fist choice. I had intended on buying  an iPhone, but for various reasons I decided against that. This was a fist for me. In my mind I had “settled” for the new curve so I was a little ho hum about it, but that all changed when I started to use it.

First, I noticed an interesting reaction from the guys at the phone store. They gathered around to look at it, and were commenting on how nice and how small it was. Therein lies my first comment, for a full keyboard device the 8900 is small, light, and thin. It’s easy to handle in one hand and yet has the same sturdy BlackBerry feel that most BB users have become accustomed to. Put side by side with the original Curve, the 8900 looks sleek modern. The organization of the icons is also a lot more elegant and efficient. Applications, games, and downloads are organized in subfolders rather than being strewn around the desktop.  This is what should be expected from a device that is vying for the attention of both consumer and corporate clients.

The second most noticeable thing about the 8900 is the new operating system, and processor hardware. There is a noticeable speed difference from the old curve. The OS and the applications are much more responsive. One place where this can be really experienced full is when browsing the internet. One of the reason I was considering an iPhone is because of the lousy web browsing experience I had had on my previous Blackberries. Not so with the new curve. The browsing experience now parallels what you may experience on standards compliant computer browser. When you add all this together with the new high resolution display you get a device that’s really enjoyable to use.

In conclusion the new 8900 Curve from Blackberry is a pleasant surprise. Its’ lightweight, sturdy construction make it easy to handle. While its’ new OS and processing hardware make it responsive and effective as a communication tool. And just to prove the Blackberry can offer a contender worthy of the competition they’ve even managed to make it attractive.
