Imaging Software

Imaging software is very popular among desktop and laptop technicians. Everybody has their favourite. For many techs it's Ghost, but there are alternatives. One alternative that I really like is Drive Snapshot. I recently downloaded and used the evaluation version and I was quite impressed. The software creates The image while you go about your business. (like Ghost). You can also browse a completed image, by using Drive Snapshot to mount it to a drive letter. It's not very expensive and does a great job. If you're looking for free imaging software then you can always try Microsoft's ImageX software. This is a command line imaging tool that is fast and efficient. With ImageX you can mount the image to a folder and view the contents. You can also inject drivers into the image and reseal it. This is hand for people managing a few images built on different hardware. The fact that it's a command line tool made the learning curve a little steeper but it was Worth the effort. If you absolutely must have a GUI then you can use it with GImageX. I have mixed feelings about Vista, but the work that Microsoft did developing their packaging and delivery (of which ImageX is integral) needs to be applauded. I can't wait for Windows 7 so I can use it more often.
